01 — The story

The story

Papnash Shiva Temple stands in a green valley at Bidar and takes its name from the Papnash spring, whose water falls into a pond beside the shrine. Paap means sin and nash means destruction, and devotees bathe in the pond to cleanse themselves before they worship.

Tradition says Rama set up the temple and its linga on his way back from Lanka to Ayodhya after his victory. The large Shivalinga in the sanctum is flanked by three smaller ones. The temple fell into neglect for a time and was later restored by devotees; it is busiest during Shivaratri.
