The story

Set up by the state government in 1983, the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre stands on Gandhi Mandapam Road in Kotturpuram, next to the Central Leather Research Institute, in the wooded Adyar–Guindy belt often called the city's green lungs. Kasturba Nagar MRTS station is about 1 km away. Its main exhibition building, the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, opened in 1988 together with the B. M. Birla Planetarium.

The planetarium has a 15-metre dome with 250 seats and runs shows in Tamil and English on the Solar System, eclipses, comets and the deep sky; since a 2019 refit it uses a hybrid digital projector, and the old mechanical one, nicknamed 'The Resting Giant', is displayed on the campus. Galleries cover subjects from defence research, oceans and transport to space, nuclear power and Ramanujan's mathematics, alongside a 3D science theatre and fun mirrors. The Solomon Victor Heart Museum, added in 2007, shows preserved hearts of animals including whales and elephants. Outdoors there are science, traffic and evolution parks.
