The story

Madhya Kailash, or Nadukkayilai, is a temple in south Chennai where Sardar Patel Road in Adyar meets Rajiv Gandhi Salai, opposite the Central Leather Research Institute and close to IIT Madras. Its main deity is Venkata Ananda Vinayakar, surrounded by shrines to Shiva, Surya, Devi and Vishnu, with further shrines to Anjaneya, Swarna Bhairavar and the Navagrahas added at devotees' request, and a Murugan shrine in the mandapam.

The temple is famous for Adhyantha Prabhu, an image that is Ganesha on the right and Hanuman on the left, made after a temple official saw such a form in a vision; devotees may light camphor before it themselves. Eight bells stand for the seven notes of the scale and the returning Sa. On Vinayaka Chaturthi the sun's rays fall on the main deity. Each afternoon the priest performs rites for ancestors on behalf of devotees, ending with rice offered to crows, a service open to all.
