The story

Guindy National Park covers about 2.7 square kilometres in south Chennai, next to Raj Bhavan. It protects a patch of rare tropical dry evergreen vegetation with more than 350 recorded plant species, most of them native. Wildlife includes blackbuck, spotted deer, jackals, tortoises, geckos and snakes, along with over 100 bird species and around 60 kinds of butterflies and spiders.

The park is named after Guindy Lodge, put up between 1672 and 1678 as a hunting retreat for the British East India Company; the building is now the visitor centre. Beside the park is the Guindy Snake Park, where king cobras, pythons, vipers and other reptiles are kept and their place in the ecosystem is explained.
