The story

Madras War Cemetery in Chennai holds the graves of 856 Commonwealth servicemen who died in the Second World War. It was set up by the Imperial War Graves Commission, the body now called the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and its lawns are kept by a gardening team that has to cope with heatwaves and flash floods. Head gardener Perumal Venkatraman received the British Empire Medal in June 2022 for this work.

Within the grounds stands the Madras 1914-18 War Memorial, which contains no burials. It lists the names of more than 1,039 British and Commonwealth soldiers whose graves lie in civil and cantonment cemeteries across India.
