The B.M. Birla Planetarium in Chennai presents shows on astronomy under its dome, using a Zeiss projector and 3D sound. Programmes cover subjects such as how stars are born and die, how galaxies form, black holes, dark matter and the Northern Lights. It is named after the industrialist B.M. Birla, who backed science education and research.
Beyond the shows, the planetarium runs workshops and educational programmes, including astronomy sessions for children and talks by scientists. It sits beside the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, home to a science museum, an aquarium and a butterfly park.
