01 — The story

The story

The Sunehri Masjid, or Golden Mosque, stands just outside the south-west corner of the Red Fort's Delhi Gate in Old Delhi, facing Netaji Subhash Park. Qudsia Begum, mother of Emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur, ordered it between 1747 and 1751 for Nawab Bahadur Javed Khan, the influential keeper of the royal harem. A later story tells of Nawab Ahmad Bakhsh Khan, who repaired the mosque, sheltering inside it with his son to escape a rampaging elephant.

The building is made of a pale salmon stone rarely used for mosques, which gives it an unusual look. Three domes crown a prayer hall flanked by two minarets, and an inscription over the central arch records the builder and the date. The domes were first covered in gilt copper, the source of the name, until Bahadur Shah II replaced the plates with sandstone in 1852.
