01 — The story

The story

This museum in Delhi, run by Sulabh International, is devoted to the history of sanitation and toilets worldwide. The social reformer Bindeshwar Pathak founded it in 1992 to draw attention to India's sanitation problems by showing how other societies had tackled them over the centuries. Time magazine once listed it among ten unusual museums around the world.

Items from 50 countries are arranged in ancient, medieval and modern sections running from 3000 BC to the late 20th century. Visitors find chamber pots, ornate Victorian seats, bidets and water closets, along with a commode disguised as a bookcase, a replica of Louis XIV's throne-toilet and one shaped like a treasure chest. Panels cover Harappan drainage, finds from Lothal, Sir John Harington's 1596 flush design and toilet jokes, poems and cartoons.
