The Sukreswar Temple is a Shiva temple on the Brahmaputra's south bank, set on Sukreswar hill (also called Itakhuli) in the Panbazar area of Guwahati. Its linga is described as one of the largest Shiva lingas. The temple is believed to have been built in 1744 by the Ahom king Pramatta Singha, and his successor Rajeswar Singha, who also favoured Shaiva worship, set aside funds for it in 1759.
From the temple compound a long flight of steps, the Sukreswar ghat, runs down to the river. People sit here to watch the sun set over the water and the boats crossing, while others bathe or perform rites for relatives who have died.
