The story

Gandhi Mandap is a museum in Guwahati built in 1965 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, who came to Assam four times between 1921 and 1946. Designed by the architect B. R. Kulkarni, it combines modern design with traditional Assamese elements. A white marble entrance leads into the mandap hall, where a high white ceiling contrasts with a black granite floor and a white marble statue shows Gandhi seated in thought.

The exhibition halls trace his life from his early years through the freedom struggle to his philosophy of non-violence, using rare photographs, letters and personal belongings. Beside the museum are a prayer area and a garden planted with flowers and plants Gandhi liked, with an amphitheatre for cultural events at its centre. A library holds material on his life and teachings.
