Janardana Temple stands on the Shukleshwar hillock above Shukleshwar Ghat on the Brahmaputra in Guwahati. Its central deity is the Buddha, regarded here as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and called Janardana, which gives the temple its name. The shrine is thought to be very old and is believed to have been rebuilt by Swargdev Paramatt Singh during the 17th century.
The stone building mixes Hindu and Buddhist styles. The mandap for worshippers, the garbhagriha and the shikhara follow Hindu forms, while carved stupas, lotus motifs and Buddhist figures appear around the Hindu deities on its walls and pillars. It has a rectangular plan with an east-facing door, and its raised position gives views over greenery and tea gardens.
