The story

The Navagraha Temple sits on Chitrasal Hill in Guwahati and is devoted to the nine celestial bodies, the navagraha, whose positions at a person's birth are believed to shape their fate. It dates to the 18th-century reign of the Ahom king Rajeswar Singha. The 1897 earthquake damaged part of it, and the restoration that followed gave it a roof of corrugated iron sheets.

The building is circular. Inside are nine Shivalingas, one for each planet and each wrapped in cloth of its own colour, with the central one standing for the Sun. Devotees perform Navagraha Puja, homa and shanti rites here. The temple is also known as a centre for astrology and astronomy, where astrologers prepare horoscopes, and it keeps a library of old manuscripts and a telescope.
