Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is a cultural institution in the Panjabari area of Guwahati, named after the poet and playwright Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. Its foundation was laid in 1988 to preserve and present the arts and culture of Assam, and its 17.5-hectare campus also covers the wider Northeast.
The Purbajyoti Museum on the campus holds over 4,000 artefacts, including Sattriya masks, old musical instruments, terracotta and clay work and traditional textiles. A library keeps old manuscripts and rare books, and the Lalit Kala wing hosts exhibitions by regional and national painters. The grounds also have an open-air theatre for cultural programmes, an Artists' Village modelled on rural Assam, a children's play park and a heritage park with a cable car looking towards the Shillong hills.
