The story

St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral at Hauz Khas in New Delhi belongs to the Delhi Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, one of the church's 32 dioceses. Its congregation goes back to 1942, when worship began under Fr. Mathews, who went on to become Catholicos as Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II. A formal Delhi parish followed in 1952 under its first resident vicar, Fr. K. C. Thomas.

The Patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius Jacob III, laid the foundation stone of the church in 1964, and the diocesan metropolitan Mathews Mar Athanasios consecrated it in 1968. The church later became a cathedral. The Delhi Diocese itself was created in 1975, and Hauz Khas is today one of thirteen parishes in and around the capital.
