The story

Siri Fort is what survives of the second medieval city of Delhi, raised by Alauddin Khalji of the Khalji dynasty between 1297 and 1307 as a stronghold against Mongol raids. In 1303 the Mongol general Targhi laid siege to it but could not break the walls and withdrew to Central Asia. Siri was later joined to Jahanpanah by connecting walls, and Timur, who invaded Delhi in 1398, described its tall buildings and stone-and-brick defences, noting seven gates.

Only scattered sections of wall remain, as the construction was weaker than earlier forts. A legend says the name comes from the heads of slain Mongols supposedly set in the foundations. Today the ruins lie among the Asian Games Village, auditoriums and housing between Khel Gaon Marg and Aurobindo Marg in south Delhi.
