The story

St. Joseph's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church stands in Meenkunnam village, 6 km from Muvattupuzha, and belongs to the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Kothamangalam. It was founded in 1921 by Venerable Mar Varghese Payyappilly Palakkappilly.

Meenkunnam has a large Syrian Catholic population. These Nasrani Christians, who earlier belonged to the Marth Mariam Forane Church at Arakuzha, have a recorded history of more than 1,500 years. One of the village's main landmarks is a copy of Michelangelo's Pietà by the artist Appukuttan, roughly four times the size of the original in St Peter's Basilica.
