01 — The story

The story

St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral stands on a hill beside the Muvattupuzha–Kothamangalam road, about three kilometres from Muvattupuzha. The site was once called Perumattom; the name Karakkunnam comes from wild kara and other thorny plants that grew here. Local Syrian Christians invited priests from Kadamattom Church, who set up a laterite cross and began the Thamukku offering, still made each year on Vrischikam 10.

A church to the Virgin Mary was built east of the cross in Malayalam year 475, with a seminary, Malpan Bhavanam, to its south. In the 15th century the laterite cross was replaced by one of stone, which still stands in the courtyard. In 1752 the church received relics of three saints: Mor Geevarghese Sahado, Mor Shemuel Kadiso and Mor Kuriakose Sahado. The present building was consecrated in 1975, and the church became a cathedral in 2013. Its main feasts are on 15 August and on 28 November, Foundation Day.
