The story

St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Church stands at Kurukkunnapuram, a hill amid paddy fields and fruit trees in East Marady, near Muvattupuzha. Jacobite families of the area once had to travel miles to church, so they resolved to build their own: the foundation stone was laid in 1865, and under Fr. Paulose Kuttipuzha seventy families completed it in 1867. A rebuilding begun in 2007 ended in 2015, when the Antiochian Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II consecrated it during his first apostolic visit to India.

There are five altars, the central one dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with others for St Thomas, St George, St Constantine with St Helena, and Patriarch St Ignatius Elias III. Since 1928 the church has held a relic of St Shemvun Qaumo Abilo, or Mar Kauma, a 5th-century Syriac monk said to have meditated standing for 45 years. It is brought out for veneration on his feast, 14 November, and the main feast, Ma'alto, falls on 2 February.
