Sims Park in Coonoor is a 12-hectare botanical garden with more than 1,000 flower species and trees gathered from around the world, set beside a dense shola forest. It is named after J.D. Sims, a British officer who was Secretary to the Government; in 1874 he and Major Murray turned what had been a quiet retreat into a formal botanical garden.
Footpaths and pavilions link four sections: a lily pond, a rose garden, a boating lake and beds of flowering plants, and there is a glass house as well. Each May the Department of Horticulture holds a two-day fruit and vegetable show here, a tradition of more than 50 years. The park is a short distance from Coonoor Railway Station.
