The Government Botanical Garden in Ooty was established in 1848 on the slopes of Doddabetta Peak and covers 55 acres. Its collections mix exotic and native plants, rare ferns and orchids, and include a fossilised tree estimated at 20 million years old. The grounds are divided into nurseries, a conservatory and an Italian-style garden created by Italians held as prisoners during the First World War.
Every May the garden hosts the annual flower show, part of Ooty's Summer Festival, which draws large crowds to see floral sculptures and elaborate arrangements of blooms.
