The story

Shantinath Jain Teerth, also called Shri 1008 Shantinath Digambar Jain Mandir, stands in Indapur, Pune district, some 135 km from Pune and 110 km from Solapur. It follows the pattern of South Indian Jain temples, its 31 ft shikhara modelled on that of the Mel Sithamur Jain Math, and its golden facade, painted by artisans from Mamallapuram, has earned it the local name of the Golden Temple.

The chief attraction is a 27 ft granite statue of Munisuvrata, the 20th Tirthankara, weighing 30 tonnes; the stone came from near Bangalore and sculptors from Jaipur spent two years carving it. The main altar holds a marble Shantinatha flanked by a yaksha and yakshini, on a base carved with lions, elephants, auspicious symbols and the sixteen dreams of Shantinatha's mother. Other altars honour Manibhadra, Padmavati and Saraswati, and the 31 ft manastambha is of Makrana marble. An annual Rathotsava and Mahamastakabhisheka are held for the Munisuvrata statue.
