The story

Peshwe Park lies at the foot of Parvati hill near Saras Baug in Pune, on about 7 acres where Madhavrao Peshwa kept a private menagerie from 1770. The Pune Municipal Corporation turned the site into a zoo in 1953, showing animals in traditional cages. After the city opened the more modern Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park at Katraj in 1999, the animals were moved there over the following years, the last by 2005, and the zoo closed.

Today the corporation runs it as an energy park promoting renewable power, with solar, hydro-energy, biomass and information pavilions. An adventure park for children aged 3 to 16 offers net and wall climbing, rope crossings, balancing and tower climbing under instructors' supervision, an idea of its designer B. S. Deshmukh to help children overcome fear. The battery-run Phulrani toy train, a favourite since the zoo days, still carries young riders.
