01 — The story

The story

Serai Lashkari Khan stands near Gurdwara Manji Sahib at Kotan, close to Doraha in Ludhiana district. The Mughal general Lashkari Khan built this caravanserai in 1667, in the reign of Aurangzeb, as one of many halting places along the old Mughal highway that joined Agra, Delhi and Lahore.

Such inns were important to the economic, cultural and political life of the period, but they fell out of use as routes changed and railways arrived in the 19th century, and many have disappeared. This one survives as a protected monument, though it has been largely neglected and is in poor repair. It became widely known after appearing in the film Rang De Basanti, and some visitors now call it the 'RDB fort'.
