01 — The story

The story

Gurdwara Manji Sahib stands at Alamgir, a village on the outskirts of Ludhiana. It marks the place where Guru Gobind Singh stopped to rest while he was being pursued by Mughal forces, and Sikhs visit it in memory of his courage during that time. The village name means conqueror of the world and is thought to go back to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

The gurdwara keeps an old well whose water is believed to have healing power, and many pilgrims come to bathe in it in the hope of relief from illness. Like other gurdwaras it holds the Guru Granth Sahib in its main hall, and visitors are welcome to sit for prayers and kirtan.
