This war museum on the Grand Trunk Road at Ludhiana was opened in 1999 by the Punjab Government in memory of soldiers from the state who died serving the country. It covers about four acres, and its aim is both remembrance and teaching visitors how defence has shaped Indian history. A seated statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh on his throne stands at the entrance.
Inside, the main hall carries portraits of gallantry award winners and of air marshals, generals and admirals from Punjab. A history gallery uses maps and written accounts to explain the Sikh Empire, a war heroes gallery shows commanders such as Hari Singh Nalwa and Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, and another section displays uniforms ranging from embroidered Sikh cavalry dress to infantry battle kit. Battle tanks, anti-aircraft guns and an old Sukhoi aircraft stand in the grounds, and a sound and light show tells the story of the freedom struggle and the part played by Punjabi soldiers.
