Senchal Lake lies about 10 kilometres south-east of Darjeeling at 2,487 metres, on top of a hill, and is the main source of drinking water for the town. It is really a pair of lakes: North Senchal, built in 1910, and South Senchal, added in 1932. The lakes fall within the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary.
The same hilltop carries a golf course that ranks among the world's highest. Senchal is a favourite spot for picnics, and a tourist lodge on the hill provides rooms for visitors who want to stay.
