01 — The story

The story

The Sawan Bhado Pillars stand within the Orchha Fort complex, the cluster of palaces, temples and monuments built under the Bundela rulers. Made of local sandstone, they carry detailed carvings and decorative motifs typical of Bundela workmanship.

The pillars were both ornamental and practical. Their name refers to the monsoon months of Sawan (July to August) and Bhado (August to September), when water is thought to have run through channels cut into them, cooling the surroundings during the hot season. They are an example of the natural cooling methods used in older Indian buildings.
