Raja Mahal stands inside the Orchha fort complex next to the Jahangir Mahal. It was built in the 16th century by the Bundela king Madhukar Shah and mixes Mughal and Rajput styles, with graceful arches and a Durbar Hall where heavy pillars carry tall arches. Murals inside show scenes from Hindu mythology. The State Archaeological Department has carried out conservation and restoration work here.
The palace is tied to the legend of the Ram Raja Temple. Madhukar Shah, a Krishna devotee, quarrelled with his queen Ganesh Kunwari, a Rama devotee, over a pilgrimage and told her to bring back her deity from Ayodhya. Lord Rama is said to have come with her on three conditions, one being that he be treated as a king in Orchha. The palace is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
