01 — The story

The story

Orchha's Ram Raja Temple is said to be unique in India for treating Lord Rama as a reigning king, complete with an official guard of honour. It dates to the 16th century and Madhukar Shah of the Bundela kingdom. Its multi-tiered form with domes, turrets, carvings and sculptures blends Rajput and Mughal styles, and it is painted white, pink and yellow.

Legend says Queen Ganesh Kunwari brought Rama from Ayodhya after long prayer, on condition that he travel on foot during Pushya Nakshatra, be treated as a monarch, and stay wherever he was first seated. The Chaturbhuj Temple was not yet finished when the idol arrived, so it was placed in her kitchen, where it stayed and where this temple grew. Madhukar Shah handed his crown to Rama. It is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
