Chaturbhuj, meaning 'four-armed', refers to Lord Vishnu, to whom this Orchha temple is dedicated. Its foundation stone was laid in 1558 under the Bundela king Madhukar Shah, and work went on for decades until it was finished in the reign of his son Vir Singh Deo. Its vimana, or spire, measures 344 feet, among the tallest of any Hindu temple.
The temple was first meant for Lord Rama. Queen Rani Ganesh Kuwari brought an idol of Rama from Ayodhya and kept it in her palace while building went on, but by local belief it could not be moved once there, and that palace became the Ram Raja Temple. The Chaturbhuj Temple was given to Vishnu instead and is busiest at Janmashtami and Vaikuntha Chaturdashi.
