The story

Sanskriti Museum and Art Gallery in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, was founded in 1991 by Bulu Imam, after he found the district's first rock art at Isco and went on to record more than a dozen Meso-Chalcolithic rock art sites and the prehistory of the North Karanpura Valley. It occupies his private building, once the Tea Garden District Labour Association building of 1919, on a 3-acre campus with a grove of trees.

The collection is arranged in three galleries. The archaeological gallery holds Palaeolithic to Neolithic stone tools, microliths, Bronze and Iron Age objects, pottery and Buddhist antiquities from around Hazaribagh. The ethnological gallery covers the Birhor, Santhal and Oraon peoples, and the tribal art and crafts gallery shows local crafts and textiles alongside about 200 Khovar (marriage) and Sohrai (harvest) paintings. A small library and research archive support the displays.
