Konar Dam spans the Konar, a Damodar tributary, in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, about 41 kilometres south-east of Hazaribagh. It opened in 1955 as the second of four multi-purpose dams built by the Damodar Valley Corporation in its first phase. The corporation was formed in 1948 in response to the disastrous flood of 1943; the engineer Voorduin had proposed eight dams and a barrage, but the scheme was cut to dams at Tilaiya, Konar, Maithon and Panchet, with a barrage at Durgapur.
The dam runs 4,535 metres in length and stands 48.77 metres high. When full, its reservoir spreads over 27.92 square kilometres, with an effective storage of 176 million cubic metres. The site has been developed as a recreational spot.
