The story

Sandesh Museum of Communication in Bengaluru is devoted to India's postal history and the means by which people have sent messages. It opened in 2019 inside a preserved and refurbished post office, said to be 140 years old. The building has had many lives: it housed a Government Museum in 1865, founded by the Scottish surgeon Edward Balfour, which gave Museum Road its name, and later served a jail supervisor as a home, then a bank.

Six halls divide the collection. Sandesha shows stamps on themes such as Indian cinema and the birth of the nation, while Samparka gathers equipment including a morse transmitter and mail bomb detector. Others hold an 1889 inspector's report, images of the floating post office on Dal Lake, VSAT apparatus, post-office clocks, brass weights and postmen's raincoats. The philatelic gallery has a Penny Black, tools for examining stamps and an activity area with quiz machines for children.
