The story

Rudrasagar Lake, also called Twijilikma, lies in the Melaghar block of Sipahijala district, about 52 km from Agartala. It is a natural settling basin: three streams flow in, drop their silt, and clear water leaves through the Kachigang channel to the Gumati River. It was declared a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2007, and it is a potential Important Bird Area, drawing large numbers of waterfowl in winter, including the endangered Baer's pochard and the ferruginous duck.

The lake's best-known feature is Neermahal, the water palace near its northeastern shore, built between 1935 and 1938 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya of Tripura as a summer retreat. The lake faces serious pressure from silt, runoff and invasive weeds, and its area has shrunk from about 1,000 hectares before 1950 to around 100 today.
