01 — The story

The story

Roha Fort stands at the edge of Roha village in Nakhatrana Taluka, about 50 km from Bhuj, and was the seat of Roha, the leading jagir of Kutch, with about 52 villages under it. It covers almost 16 acres, rises 500 feet above the ground and 800 feet above sea level, and is connected by a main road. Sahebji, a brother of Rao Khengarji I (1510–1585), founded the village; his successor Jiyaji added two big tanks, and Jiyaji's son Thakore Noganji built the fort.

The place is also called Roha Sumari Fort, or Sumari Roha, after a story tied to the site. Seeking asylum, 120 Soomra Rajput princesses turned to Abda, Jagirdar of Abdasa. He died fighting Allaudin Khilji, after which all of them gave up their lives and took samadhi here. The Gujarat poet Kalapi wrote romantic poems at Roha hill, drawn by its peace and closeness to nature. Peacocks and other birds can still be seen here.
