Tera Fort stands near Tera village in south-western Kutch, beside a group of three lakes known as Tretara, among them Sumerasar. It was built by a Jadeja chief who had been granted the Tera estate in the reign of Deshalji I. Gateways, bastions and stretches of wall survive.
Under Maharao Lakhpatji, Sumraji Thakore of Tera spoke against the Rao of Kutch, and Lakhpatji sent an army against him. Ram Singh Malam set up the guns, the first use of artillery in Kutch, and after a three-month siege Sumraji surrendered and apologised. The walls were damaged again in the 1819 earthquake and later repaired.
