Ratanpur is a small, historic town set among green hills in Bilaspur district. Mentioned in old inscriptions as Ratanpura, it is a place of pilgrimage as well as of interest for its long history, and draws both devotees and people interested in the past.
In the medieval period Ratanpur rose to importance when the Kalachuri king Ratnadeva I moved his capital here, attracted by its strategic position. The town is also known as Chaturyugi Nagari, a title meaning that it is held to have existed through all four ages of Hindu cosmology. Its temples, among them the shrine of Mahamaya, make it a centre of worship in the region.
