01 — The story

The story

Malhar, in Bilaspur district, is an archaeological site that throws light on the kingdoms of ancient South Kosala. Excavated pottery and objects show five main phases of settlement, and the remains include ruined temples, sculpture and inscriptions recording events and rituals of the past.

The Deor and Dindeshwari temples, from the Kalachuri period, are known for their carved images, and the Pataleshwar temple has detailed carving and old inscriptions. The site is also noted for its fine terracotta figurines. A government museum at Malhar keeps a large collection of early sculpture, and other historic sites such as Tala and the fort at Ratanpur lie within reach.
