The story

Ramchaura Mandir is a temple to Rama at Rambhadra, near Helabazar in Hajipur, Bihar. Local tradition holds that Rama stopped here on his way to Janakpur and left his footprints, which are now the temple's central object of worship; another legend says his mundan, the first haircut ceremony, took place here. Objects excavated at Ramchaura are kept in the Patna Museum.

The site is looked after by the Bari Sangat math, a monastic institution whose line of teachers and disciples is said to run back more than 20 generations, with a resident Mahant in charge of rituals and property. Bari Sangat and Chhoti Sangat stand near the temple, and saints and yogis are said to have come to them to pray in earlier times. Rama Navami, on the ninth day of Chaitra, is the main festival, with a fair, and bael fruit is given as prasad on its eve.
