Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is a small protected area of just 1 sq km in the town of Porbandar, set up in 1988 at the initiative of naturalist Peter Jackson. At its centre is a freshwater lake fringed with greenery.
The sanctuary is busiest in winter, when large numbers of migratory birds arrive. Flamingos, pelicans, grebes, ducks, geese and avocets use the water, along with cormorants, herons, egrets, storks, ibises, spoonbills and cranes. Bitterns, whistling teals, gulls, terns, jacanas, ruffs and redshanks are also recorded.
