The story

Barda Wildlife Sanctuary covers 192.31 sq km of rugged hills a short distance from Porbandar. Though small, it is notable for its plant diversity, including many medicinal species such as guggal and ashwagandha alongside teak, kadam and banyan. In 1979 the state government started the Gir-Barda Project to prepare the area as an alternative habitat for Asiatic lions.

Hyenas, jackals, sambar and chinkara live in the forest, and more than 200 bird species have been recorded, among them peafowl and partridges. Trekking trails climb rocky outcrops and drop into valleys. One landmark is the great teak of Bhadra, 32 metres tall with a girth of 5.1 metres and thought to be more than 400 years old.
