The story

Phan Nonglait Park, still widely called Lady Hydari Park, is a public garden a few kilometres from the Shillong bus stand. Its layout borrows from Japanese garden design and mixes it with plants native to Meghalaya, set along tended paths, ornamental ponds and flower beds, with a small lake at its centre of interest.

The park's best-known feature is a mini zoo. Its collection is given as 73 kinds of birds and 140 kinds of reptiles, along with a number of mammals, among them deer kept in an enclosure of their own. The park sits inside the city, making it a quick green break for residents and visitors staying nearby.
