01 — The story

The story

The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians holds the bishop's seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong and is dedicated to Mary. German Salvatorian missionaries first built the wooden Church of the Divine Saviour on the site in 1913; it was then the first Catholic cathedral of the Assam mission, and it burned down on Good Friday in April 1936. Keith Cantlie, who then chaired the Shillong Municipality, oversaw plans for a replacement that August; the foundation stone received its blessing two months later.

The new church rests on a bed of sand, chosen as a guard against earthquakes. Inside are tall arches, stained glass and terracotta Stations of the Cross made in Germany, thought to have survived from the earlier church. The grave of Hubert D'Rosario, the first Archbishop of Shillong, lies near the main altar, and a Grotto Church is cut into the hill just below.
