The story

Mawmluh Cave, near Cherrapunjee (Sohra), is a maze cave about 7.2 km long and is listed as the fourth largest in India. Lieutenant Yule, a British officer, came upon it in 1844. Its passages meet at a contact between sandstone and Eocene dolomite, stalactites and stalagmites line the chambers, and a pool inside is fed by five streams.

The stalagmites here hold a record of a drought of about 200 years that began roughly 4,200 years ago, and the cave is among the first 100 geological heritage sites named by the International Union of Geological Sciences. It also has a place in Khasi belief: some say spirits of the elders shelter in it and guard it, while others hold that treasure is hidden inside.
