Pathanchalinathar Temple is at Kanattampuliyur, known in the past as Tirukanattumullur, and is counted among the temples on the northern bank of the Kaveri. Shiva is worshipped here as Patanjaleeswarar and the goddess as Kola Valai Kai Ambicai. Tradition holds that the sage Patanjali lived at this spot.
It is one of the nine Nava Puliyur temples associated with Patanjali and the sage Vyaghrapada, a group that also includes Omampuliyur, Thirupathiripuliyur and Perumpuliyur. Sundarar sang of it in the Tevaram, making it a Paadal Petra Sthalam.
