The story

The Neelakandeswarar Temple stands at Iluppaipattu in Mayiladuthurai district, a place also known as Pazhamanni Padikarai and Tirumannippadikkarai. Its presiding deity is Shiva, worshipped as Thiruneelakandeswarar and as Padikarai Nathar, and his consort here is Amirthavalli.

The Nayanar saint Sundarar praised the shrine in his early medieval Tevaram hymns, so it ranks among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams honoured in the Shaiva canon. It is also counted in the group of temples that line the banks of the Kaveri.
