Thuyartheertanathar Temple stands at Omampuliyur, historically Umapuliyur, and is counted among the temples on the northern bank of the Kaveri. Shiva is worshipped as Pranava Vyakrapureeswar and his consort as Poongodi Nayaki. Unusually, Dakshinamurthy is placed within the sanctum itself, something found in only a few temples.
The temple is one of the Nava Puliyur shrines associated with the sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada, and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva temples glorified in the early medieval Tevaram hymns; both Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar composed verses on its deity.
