This Roman Catholic church in Pragasapuram was built as a central point between the large churches at Kamanayakkanpatti and Vadakankulam. The first church, in the 18th century, had a thatched roof, and the Centenary Grotto now marks its site in the centre of the village. In 1880 its 14 Catholic families replaced the thatch with tiles, and the church was dedicated on 15 August that year. Statues of Mary, Joseph and the Infant Jesus were brought by ship from Sri Lanka.
The present church took 54 years, from a foundation stone in 1913 to its dedication on 21 November 1967, and the mortar mill used by parishioners can still be seen on the premises. The annual feast, with flag-raising and processions of chapparam carriages, unites more than 20 neighbouring villages.
