The story

Nugu Wildlife Sanctuary lies north of Bandipur National Park in the Mysore district of Karnataka, at elevations between 719 and 790 metres. The Nugu Reservoir fills its northern part, and two seasonal lakes and three water tanks add to the supply. Annual rainfall comes to 856 mm.

Elephants, wild pigs, spotted deer, leopards and jungle cats live here, among trees including Dipterocarpus indicus and Calophyllum tomentosum. The sanctuary draws tourists especially from October to April. Because of the many commercial tourism ventures and the density of elephants, the environment ministry has declared it an eco-sensitive zone, and animal activists regard it as vulnerable to human-elephant conflict.
