01 — The story

The story

The Lakshmikanta Temple is a Vaishnava shrine in Kalale village, Nanjangud taluk, Mysore district. Built in Dravidian style, it is at least as old as the early 1700s and is protected by the state division of the ASI.

Several kings of Mysore supported it. Dodda Krishnaraja I of the Wodeyar dynasty enlarged it and made generous grants before about 1732, and Dalavoy Devarajiah of the influential Kalale family presented a metal image of Rama late in his life. In 1791 Tipu Sultan sent silver gifts, four cups, a plate and a spittoon, as inscriptions on the objects record, as part of wider offerings to Hindu temples.
